Teleprompter for singers

Lyrics that keep up with you

Stage Friend works as a lyrics teleprompter for singers: autoscroll rolls the words at the song's own pace, a foot pedal scrolls or changes song without your hands, and when you practise at home Voice Scroll follows you as you sing.

Autoscroll and the foot pedal are free on every plan.

Autoscroll at the song's own pace

A teleprompter that runs too fast is worse than none, so autoscroll times itself from the song. It takes the song's length, from Spotify or from what you set, and rolls the whole song over that time; without a length it assumes 3:30. If a ballad drags or a rocker rushes, change the speed from half to three times as fast, and Stage Friend remembers it for that song on that device.

Scroll back with a finger to repeat a chorus and autoscroll steps aside, then picks up again. It stops at the end of the song rather than moving on, so the next song waits for you. See autoscroll lyrics and chords.

Voice Scroll follows your singing as you practise

With Voice Scroll on, Stage Friend listens as you sing and moves the highlighted line along with the words, so a slow verse and a quick chorus both stay in step. It listens on the device itself and sends nothing to a server. It understands English and Swedish, after a one-time download of about 40 MB for English or 250 MB for Swedish. In the Android app it then works with no signal, and in a browser it needs a connection to start.

It's made for practice: on your own at home, singing along or with an acoustic guitar, your voice is the loudest thing in the room and Voice Scroll keeps right up with it. On stage the band and the PA drown out your voice for the phone's own microphone, so there it needs a directional microphone plugged into the phone that hears only your vocals. For the gig itself, autoscroll and a foot pedal are the sure way to keep the song moving.

At home in the evening, someone practising alone sings and plays an acoustic guitar, seen from behind, reading the lyrics and chords of American Pie in Stage Friend on a phone clipped to a music stand.

The free plan has 5 minutes of Voice Scroll a week on each device, enough to try it through a few songs, and it's unlimited on Solo Pro. Turning it on stops autoscroll, so the two never pull against each other. Voice Scroll has the languages and how it works offline.

Hands free with a foot pedal

A Bluetooth page turner scrolls the lyrics the moment it's paired, and a double press or a hold can jump to the next song or start autoscroll. Test yours on the page turner test before you buy, and see the foot pedal page for setting each key.

Big enough to read from the mic stand

Set the text anywhere from 35% to 400%, or tap Auto to fit the widest line to the screen, and the size is kept for each song. The Stage theme turns the page near-black with bright text for a dark room. The buttons stay out of the way: they appear when you tap an empty spot and fade again after a few seconds, and on a phone the song's header scrolls off so the words fill the screen.

Playing a whole set? Open the first song of a setlist and swipe or pedal to the next, and on phones and tablets a small hint can show what's coming. See the setlist app.

When another teleprompter is the better choice

Stage Friend is built for songs: lyrics with chords, set by set. For a speech or a video script, a teleprompter app made for presenters suits you better, with mirrored text for a glass prompter and recording built in, which Stage Friend doesn't have.

    Questions about the lyrics teleprompter

Stage Friend's autoscroll is free on every plan, with no song limit, and so are the foot pedal, text size and the Stage theme. Voice Scroll, which follows your singing while you practise, is free for 5 minutes a week on each device and unlimited on Solo Pro.

Only with a microphone that hears just you. Voice Scroll listens through the phone or tablet, and on stage the band and the PA are louder than your voice, so it needs a directional microphone plugged into the device that picks up only your vocals. It's at its best when you practise at home on your own or with an acoustic guitar. At the gig, autoscroll and a foot pedal keep the song moving whatever the volume.

Not by itself: Stage Friend doesn't keep the screen awake on the song page. Before a gig, set your phone or tablet's auto-lock to a longer time or to never, so the screen doesn't dim in the middle of a song.

    Sing without losing your place

Add a song, start autoscroll and see how it keeps time with you. Autoscroll, the pedal and the Stage theme are free; Solo Pro, at €4.90 a month, makes Voice Scroll unlimited.
